Results of others that used our methods
Our research has focused on a relatively small number of species. If you read the previous section (section 18) about our experience with Australian snake necks or section 15 on soft shell turtles it’s clear that not all species respond the same way to any given induction method.
For this reason we have been reaching out to others to find out what results they have had using Lutalyse with or without an alpha-agonist.
The entries on the lists that follow sometimes represent just one turtle of the indicated species but sometimes it represents several. Usually we’ve received very limited information. In most cases we have no idea if our protocol of injection technique, using an opaque container and the turtle being left undisturbed was followed. Where we were given any additional information that data is indicated after the species name.
You may recall that, for our purposes, “success” is defined as laying all eggs after one induction.
Successful inductions:
Astrochelys radiata: radiated tortoise.
Chelonoidis denticulata: yellow footed tortoise. Eight kg, 1.2 mg/kg.
Cuora galbinifrons: Indochinese box turtle.
Cuora mccordi: McCord’s box turtle.
Emys blandingii: Blanding’s turtle. Lutalyse only. Also some unsuccessful inductions.
Erymnochelys madagascariensis: Madagascan big-headed turtle.
Geochelone platynota: Burmese star tortoise.
Hardella thurjii: brahminy river turtle or crowned river turtle. Xylaxine 8 mg/ kg IM first and then Lutalyse 1.2 mg/kg subq 20 minutes later.
Hieremys annandali: yellow-headed temple turtle – mixed results.
Hydromedusa tectifera: Argentine snake-necked turtle
Leucocephalon yuwonoi: Sulawesi forest turtle
Manouria emys: asian forest tortoise. 20kg, 1.1 mg/kg Lutalyse only, also 22 kg, 1.1 mg/kg 14 egg w/i 2hr
Mauremys annamensis: Vietnamese pond turtle
Phrynops hilari: Hilaire’s side-necked turtle. 60% success rate, Lutalyse only.
Platysternon megacephalum: big-headed turtle.
Centrochelys sulcata: African spurred tortoise. Lutalyse only, 20kg,1.5mg/kg. Our protocol was followed.
Unsuccessful inductions:
Some species are in both the successful and unsuccessful categories because the results were submitted by different people.
Acanthochelys pallidipectoris: Chaco side-necked turtle
Acanthochelys radiolata: Brazilian radiolated swamp turtle
Emys blandingii: Blanding’s turtle. Also some successful inductions with Lutalyse only.
Glyptemys insculpta: wood turtle
Phrynops hilari: Hilaire’s side-necked turtle. 60% success rate, Lutalyse only.
Platysternon megacephalum: big-headed turtle. Also good results.
Stigmochelys pardalis: leopard tortoise (big female)
Trachemys dorbignyi: black-bellied slider. Lutalyse only.
